FIRST WARD TAVERN
2101 St Joseph Avenue

2101 St Joseph Avenue
The First Ward House first opened in 1878
Originally, the upstairs was a hotel and the lower section was a saloon
For decades, the upstairs doubled as a brothel
The First Ward House is one of the oldest bars west of the Mississippi River and it is still in operation
The building is located on the northeast corner of Grand Avenue and St Joseph Avenue
In the 1950's, bricks from the top 2 floors were used to reconstruct the Pony Express Stables
Over the years, the building became very dilapidated and was in danger of being torn down
In 1998, a new owner totally remodeled the old structure and appears to be doing a prosperous business
The Grand Avenue bridge in the background once spanned Chicago Northwestern tracks
A newer bridge had replaced the old, but now the tracks & bridge are both gone, as well as the hill as seen in a few photos

THOMAS MARKETS
3323 St Joseph Avenue
4913 Lake Avenue
205 W Main, Savannah MO

Check out all of those Black Diamond Watermelons!
Those were the good ole days for sure
Thomas Markets were those neighborhood markets that you loved to shop at
They were a small version of the large grocery stores
In the mid '30's, E.C. Thomas began selling fresh fruit and vegetables throughout Midwest Missouri off the back of his truck. A few years later, he opened up Thomas Fruit Market on St Joseph Avenue.
Thomas Market remained here for many years
In future years, EC Thomas's sons, Jim, Roy and Ernie Thomas operated 4 Thomas Markets (I seem to be missing a 4th store)
Jim Thomas's children, Don, Mark, Mike, Carl and Kay assisted in operating the stores
Sadly, the Thomas Market on St Joseph Avenue closed many years ago and is currently a Dollar General Store

3323 St Joseph Avenue, as of 2011 it was a Dollar General
4913 Lake Avenue, as of 2011 it was Sack N' Save (in 2013 it closed)
205 W Main, Savannah MO, as of 2011 it was Green Hills Supermarket
