This is a 1953 St Joseph News Press photo showing rail workers relaying track in the Florence Addition
They are widening the space between the tracks as rail cars have gotten wider

Florence Addition was a small 6 to 8 squre block area located between South 6th and Packers Avenue in South St Joseph
The photo is a Google Earth satelite view of the area
Once this area was filled with houses and a few businesses
Only a few houses remain in 2014

A PAST TENNANT'S MEMORIES


Shirley J. Peterson comments about living in Florence addition

 I was born there and resided there until about 1959.
I used to walk to the stores all the time.
Another store was ran be an elderly lady in the front of her home.
I believe it was on Buffalo Street.
Her store was there before Roy Payne started his store.
The lady's name was Tilly and we just called it "Tilly's".
She had a glass front counter with lots of candy inside the case.
Roy Payne's wife was named Mary.
Roy had small houses behind the store that he rented to people.
Stouts store was the one we did business with mostly.
We had a running tab there and I went all week getting what was needed.
Dad paid the tab on payday each week.
The area flooded during the 1952 flood and we had to move and then redo our house after the flood.
I remember the early days when we only had an outhouse.
We were picked up in front of the church on West Elk by the school bus and taken to McKinley School.
After the schools were no longer segregated we attended Floyd School.
Floyd School was not in the Florence Addition.
I remember all the trains that passed by all hours of day and night.
The rail yards were right there with a multitude of tracks.
Reading all the names from the 1958 directory brought back a multitude of memories for me as I remembered a majority of the people.
The people were all kind, considerate and caring people helping each other as they could.
The people were poor for the most part but were honest folk
