Whitaker Cable moved several times over the years
At one time, the workforce, which was comprised mostly of women, was more than 800 people.
In 1942, Whitaker Cable was located on South 9th Street
Then it moved to the 200 block of South 4th Street
In 1963, it moved to Industrial Park, 3501 South Leonard Road, which is now currently the home of Grey Manufacturing
In 1983, Amelco Corporation purchased Whitaker Cable
In 1984, Amelco changed the name to Murphy Industries
In 1986, Amelco went bankrupt
The plant permanently closed on Feb 14, 1986
The color photo is a photo of the remaining members of the Whitaker Cable Social Club
During its heyday, the club boasted 40 or 50 members. In the last several years, the number has dwindled down into the 20s
