Located on the northwest corner of 7th & Faraon
George Olds, General Freight Agent for the Kansas City, St. Joseph & Council Bluffs Railroad was first listed as residing at this address in 1879. In 1881, Mr. Olds sold this property containing three attached houses to the Benton Club, formed by St. Joseph's prominent professionals and businessmen that year.
The Benton Club was founded May 27, 1887 by Winslow Judson and a group of some forty like-minded gentlemen of the community for the purpose, as characterized by the late chronicler of St. Joseph history Sheridan Logan, of establishing a social club comprised of business and professional leaders for mutual ease of access and friendly association
In 1894, the club was incorporated
The Benton Club is named for Thomas Hart Benton, United States Senator from Missouri from 1821-1851; the first to serve that body for five terms

Neoclassical corner-anchor building served as both the Leeds Woolen Mills Company and the Newark Shoe Company. Terra cotta detailing accentuates this 3 story brick building. Upper closed down windows prevent this from being individually eligible, but it still meets registration requirements for a contributing building to a surrounding district. Joe Optican's was an old and very popular jewelry store in downtown
The store is still located on the southeast corner of 7th & Felix but has changed hands several times

In 1890 Mr. Kirkpatrick came to St. Joseph and for the following two years was in the employ of L. D. Vuille, jeweler. Mr. Kirkpatrick then decided to open business on his own account and in 1892 laid the foundations of his jewelry business, rising from small beginnings to its present proportions
It is now recognized as one of the leading jewelry houses in the state selling fine silver.
In 1897 W. F. Kirkpatrick was united in marriage to Miss Lenora K. Ahern, of Hiawatha, Kansas.
Apart from his connection with the jewelry business Mr. Kirkpatrick had been for several years identified with other commercial activities. He was a director in the Leader Department Store and was the owner of the Physicians and Surgeons building, also the store building immediately south, and he had a ninety-nine year lease on a quarter of the block situated on the southwest corner of Seventh and Francis streets, besides other valuable city properties.
Many buildings in the area, along with this one, were razed during the 1970s Urban Renewal project. A city park called Coleman Hawkins was created

BELLY OF THE WHALE
A UNIQUE 1960's COFFEE HOUSE
7th & Francis
10th & ROBIDOUX

The Belly of the Whale was first located in the basement of the Christ Episcopal Church at 7th and Francis Street

Larry Young was a singer in a folk trio called The Chantymen

The trio sang on The Belly of the Whale's opening night

November 22,1963, the day President Kennedy was assassinated

The group sang at the Belly Of The Whale five or six times

All three were students at St. Joseph Junior College at the time

College Art Professor, Fred Aas, was one the people that got the coffeehouse started

There were three or four other groups that sang that night as well as some poets that read some of their recent works. And one fellow performed on his bongo drums

After opening night, The Belly of the Whale was relocated to another basement room on the south side of the same Episcopal church. There was a sign and an access door off Francis Street

The song "Blow the Candle Out" is the song that they opened with at The Belly of the Whale

The Belly of the Whale was later relocated to Friendship Hall at 10th & ROBIDOUX

The Belly Of The Whale was a 3 year old idea of several St Joseph Churches and was undenominational in form

It was open on Friday nights to all college students for a donation of 50 cents

Like other coffee houses, the Belly of the Whale had an atmosphere all of it's own that was set by candlelight, burlap covered tables, grotesque abstractions painted on canvas wall hangings and pieces of modern art and sculptures

Within a couple minutes of opening at 8:30 pm,the college students began forming in small groups to sing folk songs, play cards or chess, or develope a controversial conversation with others

This unique coffee shop gave young adults the opportunity to express themselves
